Rotary Drum Granulator

Rotary Drum Granulator

We offer advanced Rotary Drum Granulators designed to turn powdered materials into high-quality, uniform granules for making fertilizer. These machines can make up to 70% of the fertilizer, which makes them great for making a lot of fertilizers at once. Our Rotary Drum Granulators are designed to be efficient, durable, and versatile. They provide consistent output, which supports sustainable agriculture and increases crop yields worldwide.

Rotary Drum Granulator Definition

A rotary drum granulator is a machine that turns powdered materials into round, uniform granules by spinning a drum. It’s a key piece of equipment used to make compound fertilizer. It can process both organic and inorganic materials into spherical pellets.

Working Principle of Rotary Drum Granulator

The rotary drum granulator works by mixing materials with liquid binders to form uniform granules. This process is also called wet granulation, agitation agglomeration, balling, or pelletizing. This is similar to what you like about understanding how industrial equipment works.

Mechanical Operation

Drive System

The granulator’s operation begins with the main motor driving a belt and pulley system, which transmits power through a speed reducer to the drive shaft. The open gear installed on the drive shaft engages with a large gear ring fixed on the cylinder body, causing the entire drum to rotate. This rotating motion is fundamental to the granulation process.

Cylinder Rotation

The cylinder rotates at specific speeds (typically 9.5-17.5 r/min depending on size) at a slight angle of 2-5° to facilitate material flow from inlet to outlet. This inclination ensures continuous material movement through the drum while maintaining proper residence time for granule formation.

Granulation Process

Material Entry and Conditioning

Raw materials enter the cylinder through the feeding end, where the feeding system ensures even and continuous material flow. Inside the cylinder, water, steam, or chemical solutions (such as ammonia gas, phosphoric acid, or nitrogen solutions) are sprayed onto the materials through nozzles to achieve optimal moisture content and promote chemical reactions.

Particle Formation Mechanism

As the cylinder rotates, several forces work together to form granules:

Tumbling Action: Materials continuously tumble and roll within the rotating drum

Centrifugal Force: The rotation creates centrifugal forces that help compress particles together

Coalescence: Fine particles collect together and pick up additional fines and binder layers as they tumble, gradually building up into larger, denser particles

Extrusion Pressure: The rolling motion generates pressure between particles at certain humidity and temperature conditions, helping form cohesive granules

Granule Growth and Shaping

The special liner structure inside the cylinder (rubber or acid-resistant stainless steel) helps materials automatically remove irregularities and achieve uniform spherical shapes during rotation. Particles continue to grow as they pick up additional material layers through the coalescence phenomenon, eventually reaching the desired size of 3-6mm.

Discharge and Quality Control

Finished granules are discharged through the outlet, with the slight drum inclination facilitating this movement. A screening device at the discharge point returns undersized or oversized granules back to the cylinder for re-granulation, ensuring uniform product quality.

This continuous process allows for mass production with granulation rates exceeding 70%, making it highly efficient for large-scale fertilizer manufacturing.
